Vint Cerf on smart grids

I came across this site with a video of Vint Cerf talking about smart grids at ConnectivityWeek.

Part 1

The presentation by Cerf is entertaining and full of anecdotes about the early days of the Internet. He obviously has put some thought into smart grids, describing it as a ‘massive transformation’ and ‘such a complex system’, and calling it a ‘remarkable enterprise that has extremely long impacts’ on society.

But it is also pretty clear that he is no longer the same man who invented the Internet. In fact, he spent much of the first half of the presentation highlighting the shortcomings of the original Internet, such as the use of IPv4 addresses – which are running out, lack of core security features and so on.

For the most part, he talked much about ‘architectures’, about how smart grids should be designed to support not only electricity, but also other resources such as oil, gas, etc. He also talked about the importance of devices in smart grids, highlighting issues such as the long life cycle of things like water heaters, or the need for the ability to transfer ownership of devices.

This is followed by how systems and networks need to be designed to communicate with each other, and how information can be gathered and distributed to users and other systems.

He also spent considerable time talking about applications, how you can ask your fridge about what it’s housing, how you can turn your lights on and off, how his wine cellar texts him when it gets above a certain temperature.

Lastly, he highlights the needs for security, reliability, redundancy, and privacy, a section starting around the 15 minute mark of the Part 2 of the video that is certainly worth watching.
