NSN publishes wireless access gear energy use data using new standard

Nokia Siemens Networks says it is the first vendor to publish the energy use data for its wireless network equipment, the Flexi EDGE Base Station, using a new standard called, Energy Efficiency of Wireless Access Networks, established by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute.)

ETSI’s new technical specification now established a standard methodology for analysing the energy efficiency of wireless access network equipment, which, according to NSN, make it easier to compare network performance from different vendors with the goal of reducing operator energy use.

The methodology includes the definition of reference base station configurations and load levels for comparative studies, “so that everyone in the industry can measure base station power consumption in a similar way.” It is available from ETSI here (registration required).

The published results for the Flexi EDGE Base Station showed power consumption in a typical configuration, with three sectors and four carriers per sector, averaging at 978 watts in a basic mode of operation. With software energy saving features, high performance can be maintained but power consumption can be reduced to 833 watts. In some instances this can be further reduced to 562 watts with a reduced configuration of two, instead of four, carriers per sector, the company said.

“Without the standard it is impossible to compare product performance and energy efficiency improvements from different companies,” said Prashant Agnihotri, head of GSM/EDGE Product Management at NSN. “This will help us take our discussions with customers to a more concrete level comparing how much power our products consume.”

According to the NSN product site, Flexi Base Stations, which support multiple radios, are 20% the size and weight of a conventional base station, is 25% less costly to install, and consumes up to 55% less power than other base stations in the market.
