We know telecoms, we know energy – NSN
Nokia Siemens Networks is seeking applications and partnerships with the energy sector, claiming a similarity with its core business in the telecoms industry.
The company says that it will use its existing portfolio, combined with new partnerships to address opportunities in the energy sector. NSN adds that demand for renewable energy, intelligent power grids and smart meters all require expertise and technology that it already supplies to its telco customers.
“When you look at what is required to manage power grids, or to make full use of unpredictable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, as well as bringing greater transparency and flexibility to billing, the synergies with the core of our existing telecoms business is obvious,” said Juhani Hintikka, head of Operations and Business Software, Nokia Siemens Networks. “While our research and development remains focused on communication service providers, we will look to exploit opportunities where we can create clear value for our customers by entering new growing markets with our current products and services.”
NSN identified several key areas that it feels its solutions can be adapted for the energy industry, including charging, mediation, service management and network management. The company is looking to take these solutions and work with third parties to exploit opportunities in the intelligent energy market.
The first deal NSN has signed is a collaboration deal with ServusNet to help wind power operators optimise power generation and delivery. ServusNet is using NSN’s Open Element Management System Suite, a software platform for both utility and telecoms network management across different technologies and vendors.
As part of its plan, NSN will form a new energy sector business unit, which will become part of its planned Business Solutions organisation from next year.
