itu_carsCutting edge technologies developed to make race cars working at their optimum peak should be adopted by the auto industry to drive efficiencies inside cars and on the road, says the ITU and Formula One organiser, FIA.

This report by Carz Unlimited, Max Mosley, head of FIA, noted at the ITU’s annual Fully Networked Car event in Geneva, that ‘green’ technologies developed by F1 teams, including as many as 300 data communications channels between the car and the pit crew, can have applications beyond the sport.

These technologies will not only help the world better managed vehicle efficiency and improve traffic management, but also present a real business incentive for automakers, says the ITU.

“With the Fully Networked Car we can provide traffic management, monitoring, and analysis, all of which will help meet the climate change challenge,” said ITU Secretary General, Dr Hamadoun I. Toure. “Those who successfully meet this challenge will end up with a real competitive advantage in world markets.”

One of the key roles that the ITU can play in the area is the development of standards that can bridge the auto and ICT industry. In particular, the event’s participants identified several key areas that need the industry’s attention, such as developing standards that accommodate for the vast difference in product life cycles between the automotive and mobile communications industries, as well as addressing eventual privacy concerns raised with the implementation of telematics and traffic monitoring.

In addition to the Fully Networked Car event – already in its fourth year, other ITU initiatives in the area include its FITCAR (From/In/To Cars Communication) Focus Group, and the hosting of the Advisory Panel for Standards Cooperation on Telecommunications related to Motor Vehicles (ASPC TELEMOV).
