Is cloud computing finally going global?
We know that the Japanese government is interested in cloud computing, but other cloud initiatives outside the US has been few and far in between.
Despite the tremendous hype in the industry for cloud computing, and the popularity of cloud services – i.e. Gmail, salesforce.com and so on, the roll out of cloud infrastructure, established those that would benefit this region’s businesses, have yet to materialize. That said, some recent news is giving some hope in the area, especially amongst government R&D institutions.
According to this report by web2journal, Russian, Korean and Malaysia government researchers have joined the Open Cirrus open source cloud computing test bed founded by HP, Intel and Yahoo. Before the announcement, only Singapore’s IDA is part of the Open Cirrus project.
The organizations involved include the Russian Academy of Sciences, South Korea’s Electronics and Telecommunications Institute, and MIMOS, a strategy R&D unit under Malaysia’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. In joining Open Cirrus, there is the possibility that these three research institutions will also bring along local infrastructure and resources to the platform.
According to the report, Open Cirrus was created to promote cloud computing collaborations amongst the industry, government and academia to stimulate research in ‘data-intensive, Internet-scale’ computing. More importantly, there are multiple data centres that provide the cloud computing resources for the platform.
With the entry of the institutions in Asia and Russia, let’s hope that they will show the industry how cloud computing can also be leverage outside the core platforms in the US, for research – as well as business.
