Cisco unveils rack-mount servers, virtualization program

Having entered the blade server space with its Unified Computing Systems, Cisco has now unveiled its version of rackable servers for the platform – the C-Series Rack-Mount servers.

“The Cisco UCS C-Series Rack-Mount Servers extend the standards-based innovation, reduced total cost and increased business agility of the Unified Computing System to customers who require rack-mount servers; together with the UCS blade servers, Cisco’s Unified Computing System addresses the broad spectrum compute requirements for next-generation data centers,” Cisco said.

The new rack mount systems are based on Intel’s Xeon 5500 series processor, and incorporates Cisco’s patented memory extension technology that boosts addressable memory by more than 2.5 times, enabling ‘significantly more virtual machines per server.’

Like the blade version, the rack mount servers feature access to a unified fabric through a low latency lossless 10G Ethernet foundation that enable a ‘wire-once’ deployment model. The new Cisco servers will also feature the Cisco virtualized adapter, which provides adapter consolidation and virtualization optimization capabilities, with each virtualized adaptor capable of defining up to 128 Ethernet or Fibre Channel connections.

The new C-Series Rack-Mount Servers are scheduled to be available in Q4 2009.

At the same time, the company launched plans aimed at accelerating the market transition towards virtualized data centers with its channel partners as well as customers. The goal is to help its partners transition to a business model focused on unified data centers.

A really interesting green computer technology I found is Userful Multiplier. It’s where multiple people can use the same computer at the same time each with their own monitor, mouse and keyboard. This saves a lot of electricity and e-waste. A company called Userful recently set a virtualization world record by delivering over 350,000 virtual desktops to schools in Brazil. They have a free 2-user version for home use too.
