MTS India tapped IBM to build a pair of green data centers it believes will slash 20% from energy costs. The Indian mobile operator plans to leverage new facilities in Chennai and Gurgaon to support a forthcoming nationwide voice services rollout.

IBM will design and build the two dynamically powered data centers alongside a Network Operations Center. MTS backer Sistema Shyam TeleServices CEO Vsevolod Rozanov said the Gurgaon installation would focus on disaster recovery while normal operations would be served from Chennai.

“As a global telecom player with ambitious expansion plans for the Indian market, we are aware of the advantage of
adopting energy efficient operational measures and in the process will work proactively to reduce global energy emissions.”
