BT is only telco in top 10 of new tech sector sustainability index

British Telecom is the only global carrier to have made the top ten in a new Corporate Sustainability Index Benchmark Report for 2009 of technology firms by Technology Business Research (TBR).

The index, the first by the research firm, is based on a survey of 40 companies within the computer hardware, professional services, and network and telecommunications sectors. According to TBR, the survey is based on an array of sustainability metrics, including emissions, energy, renewable energy, annualized emissions reductions, water utilization, recycling rates, public environment commitments, and others.

BT had a score of 265.2, topping the telecommunications sector but second overall behind Dell, who had a score of 317.9. TBR did not specified the weighting of each category, nor how the scores were calculated. That information will be available when the full report publishes on 1 June, the company said.

IBM, HP, Intel, Nokia, Sun Microsystems, Motorola, Qualcomm and Cisco rounded the top ten of the Index. What wasn’t explain was why Dell’s score was more than 50% higher than Cisco’s in tenth place.

The list is also notable for the fact that other than BT, no other telecoms operator made the top ten. The findings imply that major US operators – since TBR is based in the US – such as AT&T, Verizon and Sprint (assuming they were included in the survey) scored below companies such as Dell, HP, Nokia, who have major manufacturing and hardware operations.
