KDDI, Sharp readies June launch of solar handset

KDDI and Sharp has unveiled a new solar power-enabled mobile phone for this summer.

The SH002 Solar Phone model is part of the KDDI’s summer product line-up and is scheduled for release on 6 June 2009. The model is marketed as the world’s first water-resistant model with an integrated solar panel.

According to this post on Akihabaranews, the solar charging mechanism will give you 1 minute of talk time and two hours of standby power with only 10 minutes under the sun.

It also features a 3-inch main display and a 1.1 inch external display, a 5.2 megapixel digital camera, and a bunch of built-in software applications for the great outdoors, such as one for calculating your body fat during exercise, a GPS-assisted golf application for judging the distance to the green, and an integrated pedometer.
