Credit crunch driving demand for optimisation tools

The global financial market meltdown is driving mobile operators to optimise their assets, according to network performance management tools vendor Aircom.

“With the credit crunch, there’s been a little bit of a change of what we’ve been demand for,” said Margaret Rice-Jones, CEO at Aircom. “There’s far more demand for things that make the most of what you’ve already got. Whereas during times when there’s a lot of roll outs, people say ‘how do I put more things on the ground as fast as possible’.”

Aircom announced this week contracts with GTel-Mobile in Vietnam and Uganda’s Warid Telecom for its Optima performance and service management platform.

“People are looking at that and saying, ‘I want to get my coverage out as fast as possible, but I absolutely need to optimise that both from the perspective of the subscriber experience right,’ because they have competitors with more mature networks out there. On the other hand, they are also looking farther in the financial return aspect,” she said. “I would say that what is happening in Asia is that they are going through the curve of the lifecycle of a network, much faster than they were, four, five years ago. They are learning from the experience in other parts of the world and then driving through the adoption curve much faster.”

Rice Jones added that Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines are the fastest growing markets for Aircom currently with Thailand expected to catch up next year as the government issues its 3G licenses.

Meanwhile, Aircom also said it has entered into a development partnership with Chinese network vendor, ZTE, to integrate support for its solutions inside ZTE’s equipment. The deal includes advanced testing of Aircom’s solutions of future ZTE products, Rice-Jones said, adding that the company has similar agreements with the majority of equipment vendors, including Huawei.
