Telenor Group tops Sustainability Book – mobile telecoms scored no better than silver class

The Telenor Group has been ranked the best Mobile Telecom company in the world by the Sustainability Yearbook 2008. PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) invite the 2,500 largest companies based on the Dow Jones Global Index every year to participate in SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment.

Telenor was awarded both titles for the Mobile Telecom sector, SAM Sector Leader and SAM Sector Mover. The telecommunication company won for managing the risk deriving from sector-specific economic, environmental and social developments but also for improving its sustainability performance the most since 2007.

This was the first year that the book allocated status rankings. Along with their position against their peers, each company was also given a status for their achievements. Gold denoted the top achievers followed by silver and bronze.

Telenor Group, while topping the Mobile Telecom sector, scored silver class, ahead of BCE, Vodafone, SK Telecom and TeliaSonera. So despite the many efforts of the mobile industry to reduce its impact on the environment and achieve sustainable practices, it remained second class in the eyes of the judging panel.
